Skógafoss Waterfall

Update: On our third trip to Iceland in July, 2018, we discovered Kvernufoss, a (very) close neighbor to Skógafoss. If you plan on seeing Skógafoss, you must plan on seeing Kvernufoss.

Skógafoss Waterfall is one of the largest and most popular in Iceland, with a width of 82 feet and a drop of 200 ft. It’s located in South Iceland about three miles from the town of Skógar and along the Southern Ring Road. According to legend, a viking settler buried a treasure in the cave behind the falls.

How do you get there? There are plenty of tour buses that stop at Skogafoss on the South Iceland Tour, but we rented a car so we could stay as long as we wanted. Driving straight from Reykjavik to Skogafoss takes about two hours, however, if you’re planning on seeing Skogafoss, make it worth your while and also consider stopping at SeljalandsfossDyrhólaey, Reynisdrangar, and Vik. Per usual, whenever driving on your own accord, add 30 – 45 minutes to your agenda for jaw dropping picture opportunities. Google Map it.

Why should you go? Have you seen pictures? The hike up the steps will definitely test your fitness, but it’s worth the trek. Once you get to the viewing platform you will be rewarded with views of the waterfall, the ocean, and the mountains. DON’T stop there– take the path that follows the river upstream where there are unbelievable sights.

How much time should be spent here? You could spend 30 minutes at the falls, however, if you climb the stairs and hike along the river, you could spend up to two hours. If you’re into hiking, you could spent at least four hours traveling north alongside the river and towards the Fimmvörðuháls pass between two glaciers.

How much does it cost? It’s free. Located close by are restrooms and a restaurant.
